The Nervous System has 2 parts; the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
The CNS has 2 major structures; the brain, and the spinal cord.
The brain is found in the skull/cranium.
There are 6 structures in the brain; Cerebrum, Cerebellum, Diencephalon, Midbrain, Pons, and the Medulla Oblongata.
The Cerebrum is the largest section of the brain
The cerebrum is divided into 2 major hemisphere, the right and the left.
The cerebrum is further divided into 4 lobes; Frontal, Parietal, Temporal, Occipital.
The frontal lobe (cerebrum) is primarily responsible for reasoning and thought.
The parietal lobe (cerebrum) is primarily responsible for integrating sensory information.
The temporal lobe (cerebrum) is primarily responsible for processing auditory information from the ears.
the occipital lobe (cerebrum) is primarily responsible for processing VISUAL information from the eyes.
The cerebellum is a section of the brain that is located at the back of the head, below the cerebrum, and above the 1st cervical of the neck.
The cerebellum is responsible for muscle coordination, balance, posture, and muscle tone.
The diencephalon if found between the cerebrum and the midbrain.
The diencephalon contains 2 structures; the Thalamus, and the Hypothalamus.
The Thalamus (diencephalon) directs sensory impulses to the cerebrum.
The Hypothalamus (diencephalon) controls and regulates the autonomic nervous system such as; temperature, appetite, water balance, sleep, and blood vessel constriction and dilation.
The Hypothalamus (diencephalon) controls emotions such as; anger, fear, pleasure, pain, and affection.
The Midbrain is located below the cerebrum.
The Midbrain is responsible for eye and auditory reflexes.
The Pons is located below the midbrain, in the Brainstem.
The Pons is responsible for certain reflex actions.
