Mean ,medium , mode average

Cards (9)

  • There are three different types of average used in science: mean, median, and mode
  • Mean:
    • Calculated by adding all values together and dividing by the total number of values
    • Most common type of average used
  • Median:
    • The middle value when all data is arranged in order
    • If there are an even number of readings, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers
  • Mode:
    • The value that appears most often in a set of data
  • To calculate the mean, add up all the values and divide by the total number of values
  • In an ecological investigation, two students placed ten quadrats in shaded and sunny areas to count dandelions in each
  • The students calculated the mean number of dandelions in the shade to be 3.6 and in the sun to be 5.7
  • The median for the number of dandelions in the shade is 4, and in the sun is 5.5
  • The mode for the number of dandelions in the shade is 4, and in the sun is 5
