  • The 13th Amendment - forever abolished slavery as an institution in all U.S. states and territories. End of slavery was a moral issue for some Americans especially Abolitionists. Events like Civil war had ensured there was no turning back. So many black soldiers had fought against the Confederacy and played such an important part in its defeat that many Northern whites simply could not allow their return to slavery.
  • 13th amendment - The feeling in the Republican party was that slavery had been the underlying cause of civil war and this convinced Republican that its continuation was likely to lead to future conflict. Blacks played a major role in the passage of the Amendment. So many slaves had run away from their master that the restoration of slavery would have proved impossible.
  • 13th amendment - Lincoln worried about the constitutional status of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was a war measure that would be dubious validity once the war has ended. Lincoln felt that a constitutional amendment was the best and indeed the only proper way to abolish slavery.
