  • How is the endocrine system different from the central nervous system?
    • The endocrine system coordinates the body’s response to environmental changes using chemical messengers (hormones).
    • The central nervous system uses electrical impulses.
  • the central nervous systems trigger rapid responses that targets a small area using electrical messengers.
  • the endocrine (hormonal) system triggers slower responses which uses hormones to send messages to large areas of the body.
  • target cells have receptors on them that recognise specific hormones. When these hormones bind with the receptor, it causes a change inside the cell.
  • HORMONES are secreted by glands into the bloodstream, where they travel around the body until they reach their target cells or organs.
  • thyroxine increases the basal metabolic rate and is regulated by a negative feedback loop
