  • after the Pearl Harbor attack, 5 million men volunteered for the war. 10 million were drafted
  • Military Training Bases were developed in California + Florida. Soldiers had to train for 8 weeks
    • soldiers were nicknamed GI's because of the government issued supplies
  • George Marshall: Army chief of staff
    • helped develop the US war strategy
  • 350k women served in WW2. in 2013 women were able to serve in combat positions
  • Double V Campaign: Victory during the war. Victory at home concerning civil rights
  • Over 1 million AA served during the war + had their first combat in April, 1943. 13K chinese americans served in the war. 33K Japanese Americans served.
  • Propaganda: posters, flyers, short films
  • 85 million people a week went to the movies
  • War bonds- the US raised l85 bilion dollars selling bonds
  • young children helped the war effort by participating in Scrap Drives some items included: iron rubber, + clothes
  • Victory Gardens: grown by Americans with the produce being donated to the war
  • Ration Book - each family was given a coupon book which allowed them to buy items. The books were redistributed once a month
