  • strengths?
-father of Criminology – first scientific theory
-holistic (for its time)- takes a broad view of why crime occurs- looked at medical records and patterns in behaviours, not just at the physiology of them
-first theory to state that crime doesn’t happen through free will- so maybe crime can be reduced and avoided?
  • weaknesses?
The scientific credibility of Lombroso's work is questioned because no one else has ever been able to find similar links between facial features and criminality.
Many claim that the atavistic form focuses on non-Western features and could be interpreted as racist. For example, some atavistic traits suggested by Lombroso include dark, curly hair, which some claim would lead to racial profiling.
