• Abelino's knee injury, Credcencio's headaches and Bernado's stomach ache- couldn't be treated by mainstream doctors in Washington as there was a language barrier where they were unable to explain their issue.
• Cultural barriers as the doctors made stereotypes and assumed that all of their problems were a consequence of drinking alcohol, blaming the patient for their condition- 'myopic vision' only focusing on symptoms rather than person as a whole.
• Racial differences restrict Holmes from fully understanding Triqui- at beginning of ethnography there were '3 army soldiers' that were on bus and they assumed he was a coyote trying to help Triqui cross border so they can get jobs. Holmes denies it and is then questioned by soldier saying "then why are you taking all these guys"
