  • In July 1936, Republican forces numbered 23,000 troops, whilst the Nationalists numbered only 8,000
  • Key Nationalist Leaders:

    2. Calvo Sotelo (Carlists)

    4. Antonio Primo de Rivera (Falange)
    5. General Franco (Nationalists)
  • Key Republican leaders:
    1. Santiago Casares Quiroga (anti-weapons)
    2. Diego Martinez Barrio (anti-weapons)
    3. Jose Giral (pro-weapons)
  • Nationalist Disunity:
    1. Conservatives wanted to eliminate the threat of communism, ban trade unions and restore the authority of traditional institutions
    2. The Falange supported a social revolution
    3. The Carlists supported the return of the monarchy. By 1936 the Carlist Youth had 30,000 members, 10,000 of which were armed
  • The anarchists wanted the removal of all forms of government and supported violent revolution
  • Republican Disunity:
    1. The PCE remained loyal to Stalin and believed Spain was not ready for a revolution
    2. The POUM identified with Leon Trotsky with its leader, Andreu Nin, demanding an immediate revolution to overthrow the government
    3. The PSOE were divided between members that supported the republic and those that supported the POUM
