2.3.4 The Use of Political Terror

• 55,000 people were killed as a result of Republican "red terror" while 200,000 people were killed as a result of Nationalist "white terror"
• Targets of Republican Terror:

  1. Falangists
  2. Priests
  3. Landlords
  4. Supporters of CEDA
  5. Churches
• The use of terror to suppress political opponents in Republican zones was not as systematically applied as compared with the Nationalist zones. It was not a deliberate policy of the government, often breaking out in areas with little effective control
• Targets of Nationalist Terror:

  1. Trade unionists
  2. Socialists
  3. Communists
  4. Anyone who had opposed the military coup
  5. "Evil" elements of Spanish society such as gay men and lesbians
