Compromise of 1877

• Reconstruction ended with a deal between Republicans and Democrats. This allowed the candidate with fewer votes to enter the White House while requiring the withdrawal of all federal troops from the South.
• Rutherford B. Hayes withdrew all federal troops from the Southern states - granting free reign to the lynch mobs - clear that Republican party and North were uninterested in South and willing to allow the restoration of white political supremacy.
