Brain Flashcards

Cards (16)

  • Label the neuron: nucleus, dendrite, soma, axon, myelin sheath, synapses, axon terminal.
  • Hippocampus function: memory, learning, and emotion.
  • Cerebellum function: coordination of movement, balance, posture, and muscle tone.
  • Prefrontal cortex function: planning, problem solving, decision making, abstract thinking, language, and consciousness
  • Pituitary gland function: releases hormones that control other glands
  • Amygdala function: Emotional processing, emotional memory, emotional regulation
  • Brain stem function: Breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, swallowing, and sleeping
  • Hypothalamus function: controls the endocrine system, temperature, hunger, thirst, and sexual arousal
  • Synapse: the gap between neurones that allows the transmission of nerve impulses.
  • Role of serotonin and dopamine as neurotransmitters: This means they are chemical message carriers between nerve cells in the brain as well as to and from other areas of your body
  • How less serotonin will make you feel: Depressed, anxious, agitated, restless, irritable, and sleepless
  • Action potential: the electrical impulse that travels along the axon of a neuron.
  • If dopamine is associated with drinking coffee, and you quit drinking coffee you will feel: anxious and a decrease in energy.
  • Too much GABA means: Slows down the brain, reduces alertness, and can cause depression
  • GABA: Gamma-aminobutyric acid
  • Neuroplasticity means the brain can change and learn new things.
