Natural Moral Law

• where proportionate reason exists, it'd be right to ignore a rule
• "If the need be so manifest and urgent ... then it is lawful for a man to succour his own need by means of another's property"
• Aquinas says it is okay to take from someone as long as taking from them won't put them in poverty
• Proportionalism would agree with Aquinas's exception since:

  • there is good intention
  • The value in saving a person's life is proportionately greater than the disvalue of injustice to the victim of injustice
• Love is the most relevant of Aquinas's theological virtues in the case of necessary theft
• must take the doctrine of double effect into account
