  • Zeanah conducted the BEl project, assessing attachment in 95 Romanian children who were 12-31 months old who had spent most of their lives in institutional care(90% on average). They were compared to a control group who never lived in an institution. Their attachment type was measured using Ainsworth's Strange Situation. Carers were asked about unusual social behaviours- any symptoms of disinhibited attachment.
  • The researchers found that 74% of the control group were securely attached using Ainsworth's method. 19% of the institutional group were securely attached. The description of inhibited attachment applied to 44% of institutionalised children meanwhile less than 20% of the control.
