Cards (9)

  • What elements are lipids made up of?
    C,H,O, some containing P and N
  • What substances do and don't dissolve lipids?
Substances that dissolve lipids: nonpolar solvents such as organic solvents (e.g. ethanol, acetone). Substances that do not dissolve lipids: polar solvents such as water.
  • What are the functions of lipids?
Energy storage, insulation, protection, and cell membrane structure.
  • What are lipids made up of?
    Fatty acids and glycerol.
  • What is a saturated fatty acid?
A fatty acid with no double bonds in its carbon chain, and each C has maximum H's possible attached
  • What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
A fatty acid with one or more double bonds in its carbon chain.
  • Where are saturated fatty acids found?
Animal fats, such as butter and lard, and some plant oils, such as coconut oil and palm oil.
  • Where are unsaturated fatty acids found?
In foods such as nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.
  • What is the test for lipids?
Alcohol and cold water test. Milky emulsion sat above liquid
