  • Titrations are a method of analysing the concentrations of solutions
  • Use single indicators for titrations
  • Universal indicator is used to estimate the pH of a solutions because it can turn a variety of colours. Each colour indicates a narrow range of pH values
  • Universal indicator is made from a mixture of different indicators. The colour gradually changes from red in acidic solutions to violet in alkaline solutions. But during a titration between an alkali and an acid, you want to see a sudden colour change, at the end-point
  • When doing a titration, you need to use a single indicator, such as litmus, phenolphthalein or methyl orange
  • litmus = blue in alkalis, red in acids
  • Phenolphthalein = pink in alkalis, colourless in acids
  • Methyl orange = yellow in alkalis, red in acids
