Road to war

• 1933 - Hitler took Germany out of League of nations and began rearming germany
• 1934 - Hitler attempted Anschluss but failed by Mussolini preventing it
• 1935 - Hitler held massive rearmament rally in Germany
• 1936 - Hitler reintroduced conscription in Germany, sent troops into rhineland and made an anticommunist alliance with Japan
• 1937 - Hitler tried out Germany's new weapons in Spanish Civil war and made an anticommunist alliance with Italy
• 1938 - Hitler took over Austria and took over Sudentenland in Cechoslovakia
• 1939 - Hitler invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia and invaded Poland(war started)
• 1935 - Plebiscite was held for the region of the Saar that was controlled by league of nations since 1919.After Goebbels lauched propaganda campaign to convince people to vote for the Reich, around 90% of the population voted to return to German control
• March 1936 - Hitler re-militarised rhineland going against Locarno treaty of 1925. France and USSR had just signed treaty to protect eachother if Germany attacked and Hitler used it saying he felt under threat. Britain did not intervene and due to Abyssinia crisis LON and france didnt either
• Spanish civil war 1936 - Germany and Mussolini supported General Franco. Germany used the war to test new aircraft and pilots and also to build alliance with Italy
• 1937 - Japan invades China
• 1937 - Italy signs Anti-comintern pact between Germany and Japan to create the axis
• Anschluss 1938 - There was a strong Nazi party already in Austria, so Hitler said to Austrian Chancellor Schuschnigg that only Anschluss would prevent problems from happening. After failed call for help to Britain and France, a vote was called and in march 1938 Hitler sent in troops to ensure a "safe vote". 99.75% of Austrians voted for Anschluss
• Sudetenland 1938 - Despite France and Britain promising to protest Benes incase of attack - leader of Czechoslovakia - in the Munich agreement of 29th september Britain and France agreed to give Hitler the Sudetenland
• Czechoslovakia 1939 - 15th March 1939 german troops took over the rest of the country
• After Czechoslovakia- Britain and France knew Poland was next and said to Hitler if he invaded Poland they would declare war on Germany
• Nazi soviet pact 1939 - 23rd August Hitler and Stalin signed pact to not attack eachother and privatly agreed to attack Poland and divide it between them
• 1st September 1939 - Germany invaded Poland, 3rd September 1939 Britain and France declared war on Germany
