  • Abnormal conditions can happen at any stage of flight.
    They are
    • irregular and untypical
    • unexpected and unusual
    • peculiar and odd
  • Wing contamination is frost, snow or ice on wings
  • Cabin air contamination- unfamiliar smell
    Actions:
    • report to FSM
    • say: location, intensity, duration, description, phase of flight
    • if necessary follow fire or dangerous goods drill
    • FSM will notify flight crew
    • complete CDL and OR
  • Go around: captain rejects landing due to safety reasons
    • Cabin crew remain seated
    • wait and listen for captain
    • keep interphone clear
    • FSM will make PA to reassure passengers
  • Rejected Take Off (RTO)
    • cabin crew remain seated
    • wait and listen for captain
    • keep interphone clear
    • commander will say "Cabin crew stand by"
    • FSM will make PA to reassure passengers
  • Controlled disembarkation: briefing with FSM should happen first
    Captain will say what doors will be opened and how disembarkation will occur (slide, stairs, jetway)
    Commands should be assertive but not shouted
  • "Cabin crew standby x2" can lead to:
    1. "CC and passengers please remain seated"
    2. "it is necessary to disembark the aircraft"
    3. "this is an emergency. evacuate evacuate evacuate"
  • "FSM to interphone/ flight deck immediately"
    to brief cabin crew IN FLIGHT:
    • LHS crew comes to galley 1 to be briefed
    • sync watches
    • RHS crew at assigned doors
    • Once LHS crew return RHS crew will go to galley 1
  • "FSM to interphone/ flight deck immediately"
    to brief cabin crew ON GROUND
    • FSM will make a PA "cabin crew conference call"
    • CCM stay silent
    • check in anti-clockwise direction L1 to L4 to R4 to R1
    • sync watches
    • say "door number, acknowledged" or "door number, question..."
    • FSM "briefing complete"
  • types of emergency landings:
    1. planned emergency landing - at least 5 mins
    2. short notice - less than 5 mins
    3. no notice
  • NITS emergency brief:
    Nature of problems
    Intention
    Time available
    Special instructions
  • In a planned emergency landing a secondary PA is made with a manual demo:
    • put crew tabards on
    • seatbelt "put on warm clothing"
    • safety card - straight after
    • escape lights
    • exits
  • How many ABPs stationed at each door?
    minimum 4
  • ABP brief "if I am not okay"
    • unbuckle me and lay me on floor by the door
    • check window for fire/ debris/ smoke
    • if unsafe take me to next door along
    • pull lever in direction on arrow
    • if slide does not inflate pull red cloth handle
    • take yourself and me down the slide
    • get 2 people to stay and help people to their feet
    • move away to a safe distance and call people to follow you
  • ABP brief "if I am okay"
    • hold passengers back while I open the door
  • Flight crew PAs and meanings:
    "cabin crew emergency station" - landing is approaching
    "brace, brace" - landing is imminent
  • can initiate emergency evacuation if:
    SUDDS
    Self - sustaining major fire
    Unusually exaggerated altitude of aircraft
    Dense smoke in cabin
    Ditching
    Sounds that indicate breaking up of aircraft
  • Commands:
    heads down feet back
    open seat belt and get out
    leave everything behind
    stand back, wait
    ABP brief
    come this way, jump jump, keep moving
  • manual inflation handle = red cloth handle
  • Assist space:
    If forward of wing, stand forward of door
    if aft of wing, stand aft of door
  • on slide, 1 person per lane per second
  • dried up exit: lots of people at one exit and not the other> redirect
  • SSK = supplementary survival kit
  • positive panic: being loud, screaming
  • negative panic: deer in headlights
  • After evacuation:
    1. head count
    2. inform emergency services of total number of passengers and of any fire/ hazards
  • Cabin preparation checklist in addition to secure:
    • headsets stowed
    • high heels removed and stowed
    • spectacles and false teeth removed and placed in a sick bag
    • sharp objects removed
    • warm cloths if necessary
    • galley power off and water shut off
    • remove name tags and wings
