Evaluation of cognitive interview

Cards (3)

  • Strength: supporting evidence from meta-analysis of 42 studies with over 2500 ppts by Kohnken et al. They found that the cognitive interview significantly increases the number of correctly recalled details compared to a standard interview.
  • Strength: supporting evidence, Milne & Bull found that each of the features of the CI were equally effective. Particularly the combination of report everything and context reinstatement lead to more correct recall than individual techniques alone. They found no effect of age group suggesting the cognitive interview is effective for all ages.
  • Limitation: not effective, research has found that the cognitive interview becomes less effective as time passes after the event and research also suggests there is an increase in incorrect information being reported when the cognitive interview is used. This questions the effectiveness of the cognitive interview.
