The underlying pathology is usually atherosclerosis and thrombus (clotting), which develops over many years and is usually advanced when symptoms appear, usually in middle years, and can include the following:
Coronary Heart Disease: disease of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle
Cerebrovascular Disease: disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain
Peripheral Vascular Disease: disease of the blood vessels supplying the arms and the legs
