    • cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an umbrella term for a variety of different diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels
    • The underlying pathology is usually atherosclerosis and thrombus (clotting), which develops over many years and is usually advanced when symptoms appear, usually in middle years, and can include the following:
    • Coronary Heart Disease: disease of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle
    • Cerebrovascular Disease: disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain
    • Peripheral Vascular Disease: disease of the blood vessels supplying the arms and the legs
    • Other types of cardiovascular diseases exist
    • However, they have a different underlying pathology, which is not linked to atherosclerosis
    • Congenital Heart Disease
    • Rheumatic Heart Disease
    • Cardiomyopathies
    • Cardiac arrhythmias
