FAMILY
Santosh was born in a society which valued sons over daughters, but her family did not wish for a son and loved her.
Santosh was the
sixth child
in a family of five sons, a sister to
5 brothers.
She was born in a small village of
Joniyawas
of
Rewardi
district in
Haryana.
CHILDHOOD
Her name, 'Santosh' meant
'contentment'.
But she wasn't always content with with her place in a traditional way of life.
While other girls wore traditional dresses she preferred to wear shorts. (kinda 'pick me', ngl)
Her parents were affluent landowners and could afford to send her to a school in
New Delhi.
TRADITION
Most of the girls in her village usedto get married at the age of
16.
But
Santosh
, despite being pressured by her parents fought back.
She threatened them that she would never get married if she was not given proper education.
She left home, and go herself enrolled in a school in
Delhi.
COLLEGE
Wanting to study more, Santosh passed the high school examinations and went to
Jaipur.
She joined the
Maharani College
and got a room at
Kasturba Hostel.
In her room she had a window looking out onto the
Aravalli Hills
, where she'd see locals going up the hills.
MOUNTAINEERING
At the
Arravllis
, she met few mountineers and asked to join them to which they gladly accepted.
She saved money and enrolled herself in a course at Uttarkashi's Nehru Institute of
Mountaineering.
There she went for
expeditions
every year. Her climbing skills matrued rapidly.
She had
iron will
,
physical endurance
and amazing
mental toughness.
SCALING THE MT.EVEREST
1992
- Just
four
years after takng up Mountaineering, at barely the age of
20
, Santosh Yadav scaled the
Mt.Everest.
During the
1992
mission, She provided special care to a dying climber at
South Col.
She wasn't able to save him.
But she ended up saving another climber,
Mohan Singh
, by sharing her
oxygen cylinder
with him.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Almost
12
months after, Santoh joined the Indo-Nepalese Women's Expedition and scaled the
Mt.Everest
AGAIN.
The Indian givernment bestowed upon her the nation's top honours,
The Padmashri.
Santosh was also an environmentalist, so she collected and brought down
500
kgs of garbage from the Himalayas.
