musculoskeletal system

Cards (12)

  • The musculoskeletal system provides the body with movement, stability, shape, and support
  • It is subdivided into two broad systems: the muscular system and the skeletal system
  • Muscular system includes all types of muscles in the body, with skeletal muscles or voluntary muscles acting on body joints to produce movements
  • The muscular system also contains tendons which attach muscles to bones
  • Skeletal system's main component is bone, which articulates with each other to form joints, providing a hard-core yet mobile skeleton
  • Accessory structures of the skeletal system that support the integrity and function of bones and joints include articular cartilage, ligaments, and bursae
  • Smooth or involuntary muscles are found in the gut and blood vessels, involved in processes over which we have no conscious control
  • Cardiac muscle is found in the heart, capable of strong, continuous, and rhythmic contractions
  • Classification of joints:
    • Fibrous joints, also called immovable joints, where bones are fused together to create a structure, such as the skull
    • Cartilaginous joints have bones connected by flexible cartilage allowing some degree of movement, such as the rib cage
    • Synovial joints are the most common type, flexible and move in a range of different ways, such as the hip joint
  • Functions of the musculoskeletal system include:
    • Blood production
    • Minerals
    • Movement and support
  • Sliding Filament Theory:
    • Muscle contains two main proteins involved in muscle contraction: actin and myosin
    • Thick filaments contain myosin
    • Thin filaments contain actin
