  • Anaerobic Respiration: release of a relatively small amount of energy by the breakdown of food substances in the absence of oxygen.
Aerobic respiration: release of a relatively large amount of energy in cells by the breakdown of food substances in the presence of oxygen.
  • Respiration: chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy. Respiration involves the action of enzymes in cells
  • upper nose nasal cavity pharynx
lower larynx trachea brachial tubes lungs
  • When we eat food containing carbohydrates, our digestive system breaks the carbohydrates down to a kind of sugar called glucose
  • Glucose goes into our blood and is delivered to every cell in the body
  • Cells use glucose to get the energy they need
  • Energy in glucose is locked up inside it before it can be used by cells
  • Mitochondria, tiny structures found inside cells, release energy from glucose so that cells can use it
  • Most cells have many mitochondria inside them
  • Mitochondria carry out a chemical reaction called aerobic respiration, which uses oxygen from the air
  • Word equation for aerobic respiration:
    • Glucose + oxygenCarbon dioxide + water
