  • THE GREEN DRESS - what does the colour plant Ofelia as?
    Colour plants her firmly as part of her surroundings and shows the strong connection between her and the woodlnd enviroment - where she belongs.
  • Ofelais death acts as an extreme statement on brutality of fascism.

    Ofelia = Ivana Baquero

  • Mercedes = represents the women in anti-fascists forces that played a pivitol role in resisting franco.
  • Vidal represents Francos party, the core ideology being authoritarian, religous and violent.
  • Vidal appearance = well groomed, clean, slicked back hairstyle, meticulous, hides the monster he is inside.
  • Vidal is living in the footsteps of his father.
  • Vidal has limited emotional capabilities. The first interaction between him, Carmen and Ofelia shows his strict adherance to formalities and locking emotions away.

  • Carmen represents the women under the rule of Franco. She obeys him, and her role is to produce a son for Vidal.
    Carmen is a tragic character - she has been stripped of life and dignity, power and agency for a fascist dictator.
