Evaluation

Cards (3)

  • Evaluate good supporting evidence
    • People are more vulnerable to OCD as a result of their genetic make-up
    • Nestadt et al 2010 reviewed twin studies:
    • 68% of identical twins shared OCD
    • 31% of non-identical
  • evaluate too many candidate genes
    • psychologsts cannot determine all the genes that are involved, because there are several of them.
    • also, genetic variation only increases the risk of OCD by a fraction.
    • genetic explanations may not be useful as it provides little predictive value
  • evaluate environmental risk factors
    • cromer et al 2007 found that over half of the OCD patients in their sample had a traumatic event in their past.
    • OCD was more severe in those its more than one trauma.
    • OCD cannot be entirely genetic in origin
