    • Glycolysis of glucose produces reduced NAD, pyruvate and a net gain of ATP.
    • Pyruvate is reduced to lactate using hydrogen from reduced NAD.
    • KEY POINT: the oxidised NAD reformed in this way can be used in further glycolysis (otherwise the cell would run out of NAD).
    Note that no carbon dioxide is produced during this process.
