The bible consists of the old testament and the new testament
the old testament contains the law, prophets, writings and history books
the new testament contains the gospels, the letters and the book of revelation
catholics believe the bible is the inspired word of God and it was written bu humans so all messages have been influenced by them but has truth behind them so the bible should not be taken literally
literalists believe the bible is the literal word of God and so it should be taken literally as it has no mistakes so if it contradicts science them science is wrong
liberal christians believe the bible was written by humans and contains spiritual truths but not literal ones and has lots of symbolism but is also outdated for modern life
interpretations of the bible means catholics can accept scientific teachings such as the big bang and evolution
the interpretation of the bible means faith in Jesus is more important than faith in the bible and reading the bible
the virgin birth was when Mary didn't have sexual relations with Joseph before Jesus was born making it clear he was God's son
the immaculate conception was because Mary was chosen as the mother of God and she was born without original sin so she was worthy to give birth to Jesus
Mary is known as the first disciple because of her belief in Jesus from the moment of his conception
the assumption was after Mary's death unlike other humans her body was assumed(carried) to heaven body and soul
Mary is the mother of the church because she has a special role of caring for the church and Jesus tells Mary that John is her son and he is thought to represent all christians
apostolic succession is the belief the authority of the church has been handed down from Jesus to peter the first Pope and all popes after him
the ordinary magisterium is the everyday teachings of the church which can be found in the writings of bishops and popes
the magisterium is the living teaching office of the church
protestants believe they have to ability to interpret the bible themselves and do not need the magisterium so they do not accept the infallibility of the pope as he is human
the extra ordinary magisterium is the teachings of the church on special matters (assumption of Mary...)
conciliar is decided by the pope and bishops in a council
pontifical is decided by the pope alone
the magisterium is important because it has ultimate authority
the magisterium is important because they help to interpret and understand the bible to fit modern day topics such as contraception
the second Vatican council was the 21st ecumenical council bu the second held in St peters basilica from 1962-65
the sacrosanctum concilium from the second Vatican council said that the laity should participate more in mass and that masses could be said in the local language and also allowed the bread and wine to be given during communion
the Lumen Gentium from the second Vatican council said non-christians could achieve salvation and encourage bishops to work together and gave an explanation of the importance of Mary
the Gaudium et Spes from the Vatican council explained the importance of science, technology, talking to non-believers and the danger of loosing the dignity of man in the modern world
the Dei Verbum from the second vatican council explained the importance of the Gospels as God revealed himself through Jesus and the holy spirit inspired the bible
the four marks of the church are one, holy, apostolic and catholic
the church is one because of the unity of the trinity, Jesus' sacrifice and it unites all faithful which is important because there are so many denominations and it highlights the importance of talking to non-believers
The church is holy because of Jesus and the teachings and prayers which is important because it is a way for catholics to be holy and experience sacraments and know love and serve God
saints are people who have lived holy lives and are examples for catholics
the church is apostolic because Jesus founded the church and passed down the authority through the first apostles which is important because it has lead to the magisterium and passes on the tradition to preserve teach and pass on the faith
the church is catholic because Jesus is universally present and commissioned the church to evangelise the world which is important because of it's history of strength and permanence and unchanging nature
catholic means universal/for everyone
the laity contribute to the body of the church by passing the religion onto their children and through their careers
