Lesson 2: Alkenes and Alkynes

Cards (14)

  • Alkenes and alkynes are aliphatics
  • the naming and alkenes and alkynes are the same, we give the bond lowest possible number
  • longest parent chain must contain double bond
  • alkenes have C=C bonds
  • alkyne has triple bond between two carbons (C≡C)
  • 1. Determine the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms containing the double bond and name it as the alkene
  • 2. Number the carbons in the longest continuous chain so that the carbon atom where the double bond begins has the lowest possible numbers
  • 3. In front of the alkene name, list the names of each alkyl group attached to the main chain in alphabetical order
  • 4. If there are multiple of the same alkyl groups as branches, indicate the number with di-, tri-, tetra-, etc, in front of the alkyl name to show 2, 3, 4, etc respectively
  • 5. Assign a number to each alkyl group in the name to indicate its position, numbering from the end of the chain that gives the lowest possible numbers
  • 6. Place a dash between any number and letter, and commas between numbers
  • 1. Determine the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms containing the triple bond and name it as the alkyne
  • 2. Number the carbons in the longest continuous chain so that the carbon atom where the triple bond begins has the lowest possible numbers
  • 3. In front of the alkyne name, list the names of each alkyl group attached to the main chain in alphabetical order
