Lesson 3 - Elements of Art

Cards (65)

  • Elements of Art are the visual "tools" that artists use to create artwork.
  • Elements of Art:
They are what makes up an image or an art object
    1. Line
    2. Color
    3. Shape
    4. Form
    5. Value
    6. Space
    7. Texture
    • Line is a path of a moving point
  • Line - It is the most basic or fundamental visual element of art.
  • Line - It is a starting place for most art creations.
  • Line is a mark with a greater length than width.
  • Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal; straight or curved; thick or thin.
  • Line - They can be used to create shape and form, as well as give a sense of depth and structure.
  • Lines are the foundation of drawing and are a powerful tool unto themselves.
  • What Element of Art?
    • Lines
  • Shape is a closed line.
  • Shapes can be geometric, like squares and circles; or organic, like free-form or natural shapes.
  • Shapes are flat and can express length and width.
  • What Element of Art
    • Shape
  • Geometric shapes like circles and squares are mathematical and precise
  • Organic shapes take cues from nature and tend to be curved and abstract.
  • Forms are three-dimensional shapes expressing length, width, and depth.
  • Balls, cylinders, boxes, and pyramids are forms.
  • What Element of Art?
    • Form
  • When a shape acquires depth and becomes three-dimensional, then it takes on form.
  • In sculpture, form is of the utmost importance, though it can easily be introduced into drawing and painting using 3D art techniques.
  • Texture is the surface quality that can be seen and felt.
  • Textures can be rough or smooth, soft, or hard.
  • Textures do not always feel the way they look; for example, a drawing of a porcupine may look prickly, but if you touch the drawing, the paper is still smooth.
  • Texture is an element of art that also plays to our sense of touch.
  • Texture is defined as a description of the way something feels or looks like it would feel.
  • Sometimes, the texture is an implied visual texture that is two-dimensional.
  • Smooth, rough, hard, soft, furry, fluffy, and bumpy are just some different textures that evoke different responses.
  • What Element of Art?
    • Texture
  • Related to color, value is the lightness and darkness of a color.
  • The lightest value is white and the darkest value is black, with the difference between them defined as the contrast.
  • Playing with value can not only change certain forms, but also influence the mood of the artwork.
  • What Element of Art?
    • Value
    • Color is light reflected off of objects.
  • 3 Main Characteristics of Color:
    1. Hue
    2. Value
    3. Intensity
  • Hue is the name of the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.
  • Value refers to how light or dark the color is.
  • Intensity how bright or dull the color is.
  • What Element of Art?
    • Color
  • White is pure light; black is the absence of light.
