  • criminal definition of crime- behaviour or action that goes against a formal law, tends to come with punishment from the criminal justice system
  • Actus Rea- the guilty act (physical)
  • Mens Rea- the guilty mind (mental intent)
  • Expectation to Mens Rea and Actus Reus- self defence
    -Within in reasonable force and acted necessarily
    -Actus Rea present but Mens rea justified
  • Types of criminal acts:
    • Fatal offences against a person- results in death such as murder or manslaughter
    • Non-fatal offence against a person- violent with no death such as assault, battery, GBH, ABH
    • Offences against property- theft, robbery, burglary
    • Sexual offences- rape, indecent assault
    • Public order offences- the public is affected not just the individual such as riot, affray, violent disorder
    • Drug offences- Possession of a controlled drug, possession with intent to supply.
