  • Erhard was replaced by Kurt Kiesinger as chancellor in 1966. Due to the serious economic challenges faced by the FRG, a "Grand Coalition" was formed between the CDU and the SPD
  • Problems with the coalition:
    1. Kiesinger was criticised for being a former member of the Nazi Party
    2. The constitution was changed to allow for an elected committee to enact emergency powers (criticised by the left)
    3. Faced threats from the extreme right (in 1967 the NPD had 48 seats in 6 Lander parliaments)
