  • Tourism is the largest service industry in India, accounting for 10% of employment.
  • India is now one of the world's top ten destinations and 10 million tourists visited in 2017 up from 3 million in 2003.
  • Tourists spend around US$12 billion in India annually providing an important source of foreign currency and it’s good for the country’s balance of payments.
  • Tourism is also important as it often benefits regions that are very poor and have little economic potential e.g. Himalayan and Kashmir regions.
