Tourism is the largest service industry in India, accounting for 10% of employment.
India is now one of the world's top ten destinations and 10 million tourists visited in 2017 up from 3 million in 2003.
Tourists spend around US$12 billion in India annually providing an important source of foreign currency and it’s good for the country’s balance of payments.
Tourism is also important as it often benefits regions that are very poor and have little economic potential e.g. Himalayan and Kashmir regions.
