  • Order of MSM
Stimulus- Sensory register -Attention- Short term memory - Maintenance rehearsal- Long term memory
  • Sensory register
All stimuli pass into the sensory register. This part has registers for each of the five senses.
Coding: each store is modality specific (depends on the sense). The store coding for visual information is iconic memory and the  store coding for sound is echoic memory.
Duration: brief, less than a second
    Capacity: very high
  • Short term memory
Coded: acoustically (baddely), Duration: 18 seconds (peterson&peterson), Capacity: limited. 7±2
  • Long term memory
Duration: Permanent(Bahrick et al) Coded: Semantically (Baddely) Capacity: Unlimited
  • Strengths of MSM
+ Research supports STM and LTM are different from Baddeley(1966), Peterson& Peterson, Bahrick et al, HM
+ Case of HM- hippocampus was removed. Could not form long term memories but performed well on tests of immediate memory span- STM
  • Limitations of MSM
    artificial stimuli- Low external validity
Evidence of more than one STM: Study of KF by Shallice & Warrington (1970). KF had amnesia ad his STM memory was poor when they were read aloud to him but was better when he read them himself.
Prolonged rehearsal is not needed for transfer to LTM. Craik & Watkins (1973) found that the type of rehearsal is more important than the amount. Elaborative rehearsal is needed for long term storage. This suggests that the MSM doesn’t fully explain how long term storage is achieved.
