• Tourists can often be targeted by street beggars.
• India is a long haul destination for European and American tourists making flights expensive.
• Most Indians are very poor and cannot afford holidays so the domestic market is poor.
• Terrorist bombings such as the bombing of a well-known tourist hotel in Mumbai in 2008 also discourage tourists.
• Access to the region is poor due to poor transport networks, especially road and rail outside of major cities.
