317 CMD Anatomy of Respiration: Bony Thorax

Cards (18)

  • Respiration:  movement of oxygen into the cells of the body, and removal of carbon dioxide, aka exchange of gas
  • Thorax:   Cavity created by the rib cage
  • Abdomen:   space containing organs of digestion
  • Torso:  Consists of both thorax + abdomen
  • What separates the thorax from abdomen? = Diaphragm
  • How many sets of ribs are there in the Bony Thorax?
    12
  • What is the structure of the Bony Thorax?
Vertebral column (spine), Pelvic Girdle (part of the spine, at bottom), Pectoral girdle (shoulders), Sternum, Ribs and their attachment
  • Vertebral Column: has 33 vertebrae, they are separated by intervertebral discs. There are 5 segments (sections/parts), 7 Cervical vertebrae (neck), 12 Thoracic vertebrae (chest & ribs) 5 Lumbar vertebrae (bottom), 5 Sacral, (4) Coccygeal (fused unit)
They are separated by intervertebral discs.
  • Cervical Vertebrae: Atlas C1 and Axis C2...
Atlas (C1) supports the skull rotation
    Axis (C2) supports skull pivot
    • Cervical Vertebrae:
The first 7 are the smallest
    7am you have breakfast
    • Thoracic Vertebrae:
    The 12 middle vertebrae
    12pm you have lunch
    • Lumbar vertebra:
    The last 5 vertebra
    5pm early bird specials
  • Thoracic Vertebrae: Torso and ribs, 12 vertebrae (where the ribs attach)
  • How many true ribs do you have?
    7
  • True Ribs: Attach directly to sternum
  • False Ribs: Do not attach directly to sternum
  • Sternum is made up of manubrium, body, xiphoid process.
  • Manubrium: Upper part of sternum
  • Xiphoid Process: Lower part of sternum
  • The costal cartilages are attached to the ribs by fibrocartilage joints.
