  • Scale refers to the ratio between the distance on a map and the distance on the ground.
  • Grid Reference is a way of locating things on a map
  • Ordnance Survey Maps are detailed and accurate maps produced to show place in the UK
  • Height is shown on a map by using: Spot heights, Triangular Pillars, or Contour lines.
  • Eastings is the distance along the map.
  • Height is measured at sea level (above or below 0cm)
  • Contour lines are lines that represent height on a map
    • The closer the contour lines are, the steeper the land is.
    • The further apart the contour lines are, the flatter the land is.
    • If there's no contour lines, then the land is completely flat .
  • Layer shading represent areas of height using bands of colour. There always needs to be a key.
  • Scale Model = A accurate representation of an object.
  • Cross - Section: To cut through the land and look at it from the side.
  • Contour Interval is the height between contour lines on a map.
  • Plan = A detailed map of a small area
  • Political Map is a map that shows the countries borders and capital cities.
  • Relief is the shape of the land
  • Atlas = A book containing a range of maps
  • Northing is the distance up the map
  • Spot heights are numbers on a map that tell you exactly how high or low places are. They're shown as a black dot, next to a number
