Reversible Reactions

Cards (9)

  • In a reversible reaction, the forward and backwards reactions can take place at different rates. Describe how this might happen during the reaction?
At the beginning of the reaction, the forward reaction will be fast , but the backward reaction will not have started yet - As the reactants turn into products , the forward reaction will slow down, and the backward reaction will speed up - After a while, the rate of the forward reaction will equal the rate of the backward reaction , and equilibrium will have been achieved
  • In a reversible reaction , the products can react to produce the original reactants
  • What is the equation used to represent reversible reactions?
    A( g) + B (g)  C (g) + D (g)
  • Describe what happens when Solid ammonium chloride is heated?
Solid ammonium chloride decomposes when heated to produce ammonia and hydrogen chloride gas , which are both colourless - Ammonia reacts with hydrogen chloride gas to produce clouds of white ammonium chloride
  • Write the word equation for reversible reaction that happens when ammonium chloride is heated?
Ammonium chloride ⇌ ammonia + hydrogen chloride
  • Write the symbol equation for the reversible reaction that happens when ammonium chloride is heated?
    NH₄Cl ( s ) ⇌ NH₃ ( g ) + HCl ( g )
  • The direction of reversible reactions can be changed by changing the conditions
  • If a reversible reaction is exothermic in one direction, it is endothermic in the opposite direction
  • The amount of energy given out in the exothermic reaction is the same as the amount of energy taken in during the endothermic reaction
