  • Hallux Valgus: a deformity affecting the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe; commonly called a bunion.
  • Etiology: Some think that the cause is an inherited faulty foot formation that progresses and becomes irritated by poor footwear, or it is caused by improper footwear. As pressure is pushed onto the bump, the irritation leads to a buildup of soft tissue and bone.
  • Symptoms: redness, pain, swelling in the area and usually the inability to wear pointed toe shoes.
  • Diagnosis: very visible and diagnosed by x-rays.
  • Treatment: Changing footwear; analgesics and anti-inflammatory meds can relieve pain. Some may need a bunionectomy.
  • Prevention: wearing proper footwear can prevent or slow it.
