  • Catholics VS Protestants:
    • Before the 1500s Catholicism was the only religion in Europe.
    • The Catholic chruch was incredibly powerful & ran by the Pope.
    • Catholics believe that the Pope was the head of the church.
    • Protestants believe that Jesus Christ was the head of the church.
    • During the period 1500 - 1750, it became very important for the kings & queens of England that their subjects were the same religion as them.
  • Religious changes:
    • Henry VIII - Catholic (1509 - 1547)
    • Edward VI - Protestant (1547 - 1553)
    • Mary I - Catholic (1553 - 1558)
    • Elizabeth I - Protestant (1558 - 1603)
    • James I - Protestant (1603 - 1625)
    • Oliver Cromwell - Puritan (1653 - 1658)
