• At the beginning of the 1800s school masters “ruled with rod” but ignored the games they played outside the classroom
• At the beginning of the 1800s there was limiting participation due to conflicts in school
• Stage 2:

  • Dr Arnold
  • social control
• Mid 1800s Arnold developed the prefect system
• Mid 1800s school boys were allowed to play sport every day but still isolated due to a lack of travel and different rules
• In the mid 1800s headmasters encouraged gentleman ship and christian values. To hopefully promote character development
• Stage 3:

  • athleticism
  • spread of team games
• Late 1800s began the “cult” of athleticism
• In the late 1800s there was an increase in public schools
• Late 1800s standardisation of rules began
• In 1950 team games became compulsory in schools
