Calorimetry

Cards (6)

  • Calorimetry: the process of using a calorimeter to measure the change of energy, using an isolated system
  • Isolated System: neither energy nor matter can be exchanged outside of the system
  • Calorimeter: a device that is an isolated system used to measure energy changes
  • Calorimeter assumptions:
    • the total system is isolated
    • all the material of the system is conserved
    • specific heat capacity for water over temperature range is 4.19
    • specific heat capacity for all dilute aqueous solutions is 4.19
    • density for all dilute aqueous solutions is the same as water
    • container, lid, thermometer, stirrer do no gain or lose thermal energy
  • Bomb Calorimeter: Encloses a combustion reaction (and/or reactions that do not occur in a solution) inside a sealed container before placing inside calorimerer
  • C = heat capacity (J/c or KJ/c)
    • combines mass and specific heat capacity together
