Dislocations and Subluxations:
dislocation
is the
complete separation
of a
bone
from its
normal position
in a
joint.
A
subluxation
is
partial separation.
Etiology
: major
traumatic injuries
like
MVAs
,
contact sports
, or
falls.
It can also happen from
disease
or a
joint abnormality.
Symptoms:
acute pain
and
obvious joint deformity.
Diagnosis
:
history
and
physical exam
by a
physician.
An
x-ray
can also help in determining the
extent.
Treatment
:
reduced
or
repositioned
by a physician
immediately. General anesthesia
may be needed.
Prevention
:
maintaining muscle strength
around the
joint. Bandage wraps
,
braces
, and
special padding
can help.
