  • children grow quickly and are very active, so there is an extra demand for energy and nutrients - they need more than adults in proportion to their size
  • good amounts of these nutrients are important for children:
    • protein is to help them grow and repair the body, examples are fish fingers and boiled eggs
    • carbohydrates provide energy for growth and physical activity, examples are mashed potato, pasta
    • fats provide energy for growth and physical activity, examples are peanuts and avocados
    • calcium is for healthy teeth and bone development, examples are milk, yoghurt tubes, cheese
    • vitamin d is for healthy teeth and bone development, examples are tuna and salmon
  • foods high in sugar should be eaten infrequently, and only ever over mealtimes. too much of these foods can cause tooth decay and weight gain
  • eating habits of children may be adopted from their parents, so families should eat healthily together
