  • Postmodernists such as Pakulski & Waters (1996) suggested that there has ben a shift from production to consumption in the definition of identities - we are now defined by what we buy and not what we do
  • Offe (1985) argues less people in society share a common experience of full-time work that used to shape the culture of social classes - we are able to shape our identities regardless of our family's social class or jobs/qualification
  • In the UK, people have more choices & things that were seen as only limited to the privileged few in society before (e.g. travelling, university, starting your own business) are not anymore
