  • A hybrid is a cross between 2 or more things
  • Hybrid Identity means someone's sense of who they are is a mixture of 2 or more influences

  • In the UK, we tend to identify/generalise negatively certain ethnic groups by shared characteristics, such as religion, language & lifestyles though this is often problematic
  • Additionally, second, third & fourth generation people and those of mixed race will also have a range of cultural characteristics that make their ethnic identity more complex (Intersectionality through nationality, gender social class - which makes everybody's experience different)

  • An example of a Hybrid Identity Blasian (Gill) which is somebody who is Black and Asian
  • Another example of a Hybrid Identity is 'Jafaican' which refers to an accent used by young people in certain areas of London - it is influence by African & Caribbean speech and is a product of multiculturalism in the area where mixed groups of white and black young people influence each other
  • 'Jafaican' is a hybrid identity which is found in the White British Population due to the influence of immigration and global culture
