'The Qur'an is not like other
books,
it is
the
word of God.'
Muslims believe that the
Qur’an
was revealed to
Muhammad
by
Allah
over a period of
twenty-three
years.
The
revelations
were given through an
angel
called
Jibril
(
Gabriel
).
The Prophet
Muhammad
began receiving messages from God through an
angel
called
Jibril
(
Gabriel
).
Jibril would appear to Muhammad at
night
and recite verses from the
Qur’an
into his ear.
Muhammad
memorised these
verses
and then
repeated
them to others who
wrote
them
down.
This happened during
Ramadhan
, which is the
ninth
month of the
Islamic
calendar.
Muhammad
received his first message when he was
forty
years old.
These messages continued until he died at the age of
sixty-three.
Muhammad
memorised these
verses
and then repeated them back to
Jibril.
As more
verses
were received they were
compiled
together until all the verses had been
collected.
These
verses
were written down on whatever
materials
were available such as
leaves
or
stones.
Each
chapter
has its
own
theme but all point
towards
one
message
- the
oneness
of
God.
Ramadhan
is considered one of the most important months in Islam because it marks the
beginning
of the revelation of the
Qur'an.
Muslims believe that the
Quran
has not changed since it was revealed to
Muhammad
over
fourteen
hundred years ago.
During this time Muhammad's
followers
grew from just a
few
people to
thousands.
