  • In March 2014, a change in the law meant that same-sex couples could legally marry for the 1st Time (The Same Sex Marriage Act, 2014)
  • The Same Sex Marriage Act (2014) was welcomed by politicians of all parties & many ceremonies took place across the UK
  • However, some surveys found that around 1 fifth of people would refuse an invitation to a same-sex wedding, and some religious groups remain deeply opposed, though the Church of England had dropped its opposition since the change in law (The Same Sex Marriage Act, 2014)
  • Prior to the change in Law (The Same Sex Marriage Act, 2014), over 60000 civil partnerships had occurred in the UK since these were legalised in December 2005, and more than 1400 same-sex marriages took place in the 1st three months after they were made legal, with government predictions that 6000 civil partnerships & same-sex marriage will occur each year
