How Disability has been dealt with in society?

  • The social construction of disability is the idea that society & its institutions have the power to construct disability around social expectation of health
  • The Disability Discrimination Act (1995) made it illegal to discriminate someone based on their condition or impairment (this act was repealed and replaced with the Equality Act, 2010)
  • It can be your dominant source of identity because of how it would more likely to be your master status, and therefore would be the main characteristic you're known for
  • Disability is culturally relative, however in some cultures, they may see disabilities caused by factors such as religion in which they believe your past life, or the actions of your parents have made your this way (also some cultures value independence, whereas others don't this would influence how others see disability)
