Learned Helplessness - Ableism

• Learned Helplessness comes from psychology and it describes how some disabled people might internalise the idea that they are incapable of changing a situation & therefore do no take action to help themselves
• Learned Helplessness causes low self-esteem & a life where decisions are made for them often add to this
• Ableism is an ideological system which prioritises able-bodied people over those with disabilities
• Ableism can cause a sense of learned helplessness and it has been argued that policies like segregated schooling encourages this even though the intention is well-meaning
