Factors affecting gas pressure

Cards (6)

  • Gas particles constantly move in a random motion.
  • What is the formula for pressure?
    Pressure = force / area
  • Factors that increase the pressure of a gas..
    ~ More collisions with the walls of the container
    ~ Faster moving particles
  • How volume affects pressure in a gas..
    1 ~ Decreasing the volume of the container, whilst keeping the number of gas particles the same, will increase the concentration.
    2 ~ In this smaller volume, collision between particles and the walls will be more frequent.
    3 ~ A greater number of collisions per unit area of wall means increased pressure.
  • How temperature and concentration affect a flexible container..
    1 ~ Some containers, eg balloons, are flexible.
    2 ~ An increase in force on wall would cause container to expand.
    3 ~ Therefore, changing temp or concentration will change volume rather than the pressure.
  • ~ Increasing temperature increases pressure ( in a fixed volume container ).
    ~ Increasing concentration increases pressure ( in a fixed volume container ).
    ~ Increasing temperature increases volume ( in a flexible container ).
