  • Phenotype is the physical characteristic of a gene
  • A gene controls a characteristic (E.g height)
  • An allele is different forms of a gene (e.g. blonde hair and brunette hair). The dominant allele is represented with a capital letter and the recessive allele is represented with the lower case version of the same letter
  • Homozygous genotype: two alleles of a gene are the same
  • heterozygous genotype: two alleles of a gene are different
  • Recessive: allele needs to occur in both chromosomes to be expressed
  • Dominant allele: can be present in one chromosome to be expressed
